Halloween Reads: For the Young and the Young-At-Heart

Here are some of our favorite spooky chapter books.

The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman--The story of a boy raised by ghosts and other supernatural beings.  Like a Halloween version of the Jungle Book.  Check it out at the Corydon or Lanesville branches of HCPL, or read it on Overdrive (also available on audio).

The Last Apprentice series by Joseph Delaney--The terrifying adventures of a boy being trained as a Spook or ghost hunter.  If you've seen the movie, don't let that dissuade you--it was a very loose adaptation.  These books are scary enough to give adults nightmares.  The first book is The Revenge of the Witch.  Check them out at the Elizabeth branch of HCPL or try Books 1-2 on Overdrive (published as Seventh Son).

The Goosebumps series by R.L. Stine--Still popular after 25 years.  Did you know that the series was originally intended to be written for girls?  Check them out at the Corydon and Elizabeth branches of HCPL, or read or listen on Overdrive.

The Monster's Ring by Bruce Coville--A boy buys a ring that can change him to and from a monster, but there are terrible side effects.  The first book in the Magic Shop series.  Check it out at the Main Branch of HCPL.

A Tale Dark and Grimm by Adam Gidwitz--Gidwitz takes many of Grimm's fairy tales and links them together into one compelling story.  If you enjoy the more disturbing elements in Grimm's Fairy Tales, this book is for you.  Check it out at the Main Branch or read it on Overdrive.
